Kundalini Yoga

SAT NAM!

Siri Singh Sahib, Yogi Bhajan

Kundalini yoga is a profound holistic healing system brought to the west in the 1968 by Siri Singh Sahib, also known as Yogi Bhajan. Yogiji, as he is affectionately called by his students, left behind a lucrative governmental career in India with the vision of bringing Yoga to the West.

Kundalini Yoga is a rich, whole system of healing in that it shines into many areas of one’s life. KY includes yoga kriyas, or posture sets, mantra chanting, breathwork, bhandas, meditation, and yogic lifestyle practices. The deeper you choose to go into these practices, the more profound the effects. These effects create great healing on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels!

Postures are very versatile and range from calm sitting kriyas to quite vigorous movement and balancing kriyas. There is a common myth that kundalini yoga is very meditative and doesn’t engage the body much. Actually, depending on the yoga set taught, the classes can cover the whole spectrum of easy to very challenging. Yogi Bhajan tought hundreds of kriyas, so you will never get bored! Many of the kriyas ride on the breath utilizing powerful breathing techniques such as “breath of fire” to help move the body.

Mantra Chanting is considered to be a sacred part of the “Nad”, or universal sound current. Mantras are basically keys to activate different parts of the psyche and nervous system through the thousands of nerves on the roof of the mouth. (It’s kind of like Morse code for the soul!)

Breathwork is also utilized and helps to move life force energy throughout the bodies nadis, or energy channels, and through the chakra energy centers. Many types of breathwork are practiced in kundalini yoga. Some are meditative, some are invigorating, all are wonderfully effective and powerful!

Yogi Bhajan also prescribed hundreds of meditations, some with various combinations of mantra, bhanda, or body/energy locks, and breathwork. Practicing a meditation for 40 days is a frequently prescribed practice to build discipline in one’s life and effect profound shifts!

There are various lifestyle practices in kundalini yoga that may be used to widen the effects of this scientific yogic system even further such as daily sadhana, or daily practice and prayer, and ishnan, or early morning cold showers with oil massage.

Jaya took teacher training with Sat Santokh in 2004-2005 and again with Shiv Charan Singh, Harijiwan, and Guru Meher in 2009 at Shuniaa. This was a life transforming experience for her. She considers Sat Santokh and his wife Prabhu Nam Kaur to be her spiritual “Mom & Dad,” and Shiv Charan Singh to be her Spiritual Teacher. Her Sikh Spiritual name of Sat Kriya Kaur, means the Princess of True Action. (It is traditional for Kundalini Yoga Teachers to take a Sikh name to help embody their spiritual purpose.) This is where Jaya Sat Kriya comes from.

Jaya teaches private and group classes in Kundalini yoga. Private sessions are done at her studio in Emeryville, or at your location, providing there is enough space. She has a large gong at her studio for a fabulous deep relaxation at the end of the class. The beauty of a private session is that is tailored to each client’s individual needs. Yogi Bhajan taught sets on many different physical, emotional, and spiritual topics and we can choose what is best for you. Sessions may be combined with Jaya’s other modalities for an extra healing boost!

Group classes are also taught in Sedona and can also be arranged for your event. Jaya specializes in teaching yoga classes at large events and in retreat settings. This is a wonderful way to Align the group energy and prepare participants for an amazing event. Combined with sound healing and shamanic/hypnotic guided meditations, these “Kundalini Sound Activation” workshops can last 1-3 hours. Please contact Jaya to book her for your next event or retreat. You can gift your participants with an amazing experience to awaken their highest self and effect major shifts!

  1. We are considering spending the months of May and April ’13 in Sedona and are seeking out rental houses now. I didn’t see a class schedule on your site. Do you offer kundalini and regular (hatha, I suppose) yoga classes? When? What is your charge for individual as well as series classes? Thank you.
